industry designer. Soon after the war, he started researching design, and in 1953 established the Yanagi Industrial Design Institute. He has worked on everything from furniture, kitchen tools, and other daily necessities to large public structures, and has also participated in the design of the Olympic Games in Sapporo, Tokyo. In addition to his design activities, he has worked hard for many years at many universities. For about 30 years from 1977, he also served as director of the Japan Folk Crafts Museum. In 2002, he was honored as a Person of Cultural Merit.
